Axis Rotation Bowling Improvement with the "Axis Trainer"

National Bowling Academy Editors
Duration:   3  mins

Description

Axis rotation is the angle made between the bowling ball rotation and its movement down-lane. More axis rotation applied to a bowling ball gives you more skid and hook potential down-lane. Less axis rotation applied to a bowling ball gives you less skid and hook potential down-lane.

Silver level coaches Dan Triske and Doug O’Bryant along with Junior Gold Champion Annalise O’Bryant demonstrate how to control axis rotation with the Axis Trainer from Eileen’s Bowling Buddy.

Axis Trainer

Made of soft silicone rubber, this block is held in the hand with the finger holes positioned farthest from the wrist. As you flip this block, you will immediately begin to feel the muscles you use when coming out of your ball. Repetitions using varied hand positioning, but always seeking a fluid spiral, help to perfect axis variations and skills.

The Setup

Benefits of the Axis Trainer from Eileen’s Bowling Buddy are:

  • Great for all levels of bowlers learning to control their release
  • Practice zero axis
  • Learn to add and remove axis from your release
  • Learn to increase and reduce speed from your release
  • Work on proper hand position

0º Axis Rotation

Locking your elbow in close to your body, release the axis trainer with your hand behind it, giving you 0º of axis rotation.

This gives you the ability to make your ball turn less aggressively down-lane.

90º Axis Rotation

Locking your elbow in close to your body, release the axis trainer with your hand on the side of it, giving you 90º of axis rotation.

This gives you the ability to make your ball turn more aggressively down-lane. When you compare how the Axis Trainer flies through the air, notice 0º of rotation is pointed parallel to the ground and 90º of rotation is pointed forward towards its target.

Welcome to the National Bowling Academy. My name is Dan Triske. I'm a USBC Certified Silver Level Coach. Along with me today is Doug O'Bryant. Doug is also a USBC Certified Silver Level Coach, along with being a PBA50 member. And Doug is also a certified ball driller. Today, Doug and I are going to talk about Eileen's Bowling Buddies and using them as a training tool. Today we have an axis trainer. Doug, you want to explain what this axis trainer actually does? The axis trainer is similar to the feel trainer that we have a video on also. The purpose of the axis trainer is to show you your axis rotation. And in a few minutes, Dan and Annalise are going to demonstrate how to use the axis trainer to get feedback on axis rotation when you're delivering a bowling ball. So on the axis rotation that we're looking for is going to be a zero degree axis rotation? Zero degree to 90 degrees is what we're going to demonstrate. And then from there, everything in between. Okay, so then what we're going to do now is that Doug's daughter Annalise, who is the 2018 Junior Gold U15 Girls Champion and Team USA member, is going to be out on the approach. And we're going to demonstrate this product for you. Okay. Now Annalise and Dan are going to demonstrate the axis trainer. This trainer is similar to the feel trainer, but it's more for axis rotation purposes. What we're going to do is Annalise is going to keep her hand behind this device. And the device is elongated, so it kind of represents an axis point, or a axle, so to speak. Okay, Annalise. She's gonna come straight behind it and through it. And you see it rotating with basically zero degrees of axis left to right. Now, Annalise is going to position her hand on the side to produce approximately 90 degrees of axis rotation. This is one extreme to another. Okay, Annalise. And you see the trainer more pointed forward. Similar to, similar to a football being thrown, but it represents the angles of rotation, the axis tilts. And then we have all the points in between. It can be adjusted by hand positions. What I like to see is the elbow turned in, which keeps the hand inside the ball at all times, so that when we push the ball away we locked the arm elbow in, we come back, we come through.
