Spare Practice with a Full Rack

Scott Pohl
Duration:   1  mins

Description

More often than not, your local bowling center does not have the technology to set up spares for you to shoot at during your training sessions. In this free video lesson, Scott Pohl, owner of On Track Pro Shop, explains how to play “The Spare Game” with a full rack of pins.

How it Works

The pin you are shooting at while playing “The Spare Game” is the same as the frame number you are in. For example, in frame 1 you will shoot at the head pin (1 pin).

Spare Full Rack 1

Spare Full Rack 2

To finish the frame, shoot at whatever you have left for the spare.

Spare Full Rack 3

This continues all the way through the 10th frame until the game is finished.

Benefits

Bowling for score is not training. Your training sessions need to include a good mix of spare shooting and physical game drills. “The Spare Game” provides a fun way to shoot at individual and multi-pin spares in a set time frame. Play this game during your training session and you’ll see your average increase.

Hi, Scott Pohl here, a three-time USBC Eagle Champion. We're gonna take you through how to practice a lot of spares with a full rack of pins. A lot of times, we go to the bowling center, we just have full racks to shoot at spares. What are ways we can really practice those leaves? The first frame on the first ball, we're gonna go for the one pin, or the head pin. Second ball, if there's any pins left, we're just simply gonna go for the spare. Now, if we're in the second frame, we're gonna go for the two pin. If there's any pins left, we're gonna go for whatever's left on the lane and make our spare. Goes all the way up until the 10th frame, where we're gonna go for the 10 pin. And if there's anything left, we're gonna go for that spare again. All right, so we showed you with a full rack of pins up there, how to do something that we call the spare game. It's 10 frames working on each pin individually with a lot of spares. The other thing you can do with a full rack, practice those multiple pin combinations. Your scores will definitely get higher.
