Description

On short patterns, the surface you apply to the bowling ball’s coverstock is paramount to your success. There is a push and pull that happens when making these decisions on which sanding pad to use on each of your bowling balls. The goal is to match up to the lane condition you are bowling both on.

Preparation is key, and you will need some of your bowling balls to get down the lane farther and others to hook earlier. In this Premium Video, Scott Pohl, owner of On Track Pro Shop, works on a few Jackson Hellen bowling balls by applying different grit sanding pads to the coverstocks of the bowling balls he will use throughout the block when he bowls on Radium.

Pitch Black

Jackson is going to start with a urethane ball at 3000 grit. This is going to help the ball get through the front part of the lane on this short pattern while giving him an idea of what it’s going to do when it hits friction down the lane.

Idle

With a solid coverstock, the Idles will be altered to 3000 grit as well. Jackson has a weaker layout on this Idle, it’s actually pin down. Because it’s pin down with 3000 grit,iIt should blend the oil out front-to-back as the lanes transition.

By making the coverstock 3000 grit, Jackson is expecting to have a nice consistent reaction on the lane if or when the Pitch Black doesn’t match up properly.

Wolverine

The Wolverine is a pearl coverstock that Jackson has in his arsenal. It is pin down and he decided to polish the coverstock. So it’s going to be pretty clean in the front part of the lane and will be a ball worth considering when the lanes transition.

IQ Emerald

Last but not least, the IQ Emerald. Jackson has a smoother finish on this ball since it’s not super glossy. He plans to use this later on in the block.

As it pertains to coverstock surface, remember that it’s a lot easier to bring the surface down than it is to go back up. So, if Jackson needs to alter these bowling balls based on what practice time tells him, he can.”
